Mortenson Company, a privately-held company that specializes in data center construction, has just released new a new study which states that “despite a weakened economy, data center industry experts predict strong continued growth and construction…” This new “boom” in data centers is primarily being driven by the growth of digitization, cloud and health-care services.

In the study, titled the Mortenson Construction Mission Critical Industry Study, factors affecting the construction of data centers were included such as investments, potential challenges and data center efficiency levels. In order to conduct the study, Mortenson Co. surveyed 90 professionals from the annual 7×24 Exchange, which is the leading conference within the industry.

With the expansion of on-line services from social networks to cloud-based storage, the need for new data centers in order to keep up with digital information and new research is a necessity.

The study noted the growth in digitized information in health care.  This sector has shown a huge increase in usage and is one of the main factors driving this boom.

Other key findings include:

Energy and cooling costs receive top consideration when making data center location decisions

83% of collocation provider respondents and 60% of corporate and public entity respondents will likely make mission critical investments in datacenters in the next 12-24 months

The trend to increase the energy efficiency of data centers is evident with companies such as Facebook placing an emphasis on optimizing server power delivery and design. Other companies are experimenting with placing datacenters in cooler climates or next to large bodies of water to lower climate control costs.

Mission-critical industries, data centers and digitization of information are topics that the average person might not think about in this new era of the cloud, but enterprises that are looking to construct a data center must be aware of the all the factors and trends involved with them. Many companies, the study found, are also shifting away from single-use installations to shared ones as the cost dynamic is better.

According to Steve Pekala, manager of market intelligence at Morternson Co., “We are excited to provide our findings to customers and business partners in the hope that they bring a deeper level of understanding regarding current mission critical industry and construction trends.”
